Sabat untuk Tuhan, Sabat untuk Manusia (Sabbath to The Lord, Sabbath for Man)

I deliberately put these two articles sequentially (written by Melody Tjan from Renungan Harian Indonesia) as they are closely related.

Bacaan   : Keluaran 20:1-17
Setahun : Daniel 4-6

–MEL (Melody Tjan)

SABAT ADALAH PERINGATAN AKAN KASIH TUHAN YANG MENYELAMATKAN DAN MEMBAWA SUKACITA.

Reading: Exodus 20:1-17
Yearly: Daniel 4-6
Nats: Remember the Sabbath day to keep it holy ... The seventh day is the Sabbath of the Lord your God ... (Exodus 20:8,10)

SABBATH TO THE LORD

One could argue whether Saturday or Sunday is the Sabbath is meant by the Bible. However, no doubt, the second day was the day that most people use for shopping, outing, watching movies, family gatherings, and other things in order to "freshen up" that is hard to do on a weekday. No one is wrong, isn’t it? Is not the Sabbath means rest? God Himself commanded it.

But there is something  interesting in the command of the Lord. Verse 10 says that God's people should sanctify the Sabbath as His own, in the NIV translation: a special day of rest to the Lord. Thus, the Sabbath is not a break without a goal, but the break is devoted to focusing on God. God himself rested clearly not due to fatigue. He stopped and looked at everything He created it very well, and in particular bless him (v. 11, cf. Gen. 2:1-3). God wants His creations have a special break to remember all the works and grace; also entrust ourselves to His care even if there is one day that is not used to working.

During this time, how did we spend the Sabbath?  It could be that we seem to worship in the church, but we're not focused on God. It may be that we have plenty of fun activities to rest the brain and the tired body, but we completely missed God, the Owner of Sabbath. It may be that we are on vacation, but full of fear that God's blessing is not enough to feed us. Let's celebrate the day of rest with a proper focus: focus on God, the Owner of Sabbath. – MEL (Melody Tjan)

Yearly: Daniel 7-9
Nats: Then Jesus said to them, "The Sabbath was made for man and not man for the Sabbath." (Mark 2:27)

SABBATH FOR MAN

Despite understanding that God designed the Sabbath as the day of rest, for many Christians who are active in the church, the Sabbath instead of a tiring day. There are a lot of church services or events that take place on that day. As a result, not a blessing of God that is felt, but a pile of fatigue.

This problem is not a new problem. Busy on the Sabbath is common for priests in the Old Testament. It is quoted by Jesus to rebuke the Pharisees who judges His disciples (verses 23-24). The Pharisees were busy with various restrictions, but ignores the purpose of the Sabbath Lord Himself. Obviously, according to Jesus, God designed the Sabbath is not as burdensome rules (verse 27). God established the Sabbath for the good of mankind, so that they can relax and enjoy the blessings of God in particular (cf. Genesis 2:1-3, Exodus 20:8-11). Pharisees action narrows the meaning of the Sabbath to ritual with a lot of rules, whereas the Sabbath shows the heart of God who so loves  His creation, including the disciples who needed food.

Is the Sabbath a burden or a joy for you? What is the focus of your Sabbath: Christ or ritual worship and service? If Sunday is a "busy" day for you, think other day of rest when you can really relax and enjoy God specifically. The Bible mentions one of seven days shall be sanctified as the Sabbath. A day when God is primarily at the center and source of our joy, not the other. -MEL (Melody Tjan)

SABBATH IS A WARNING THAT GOD WILL SAVE YOU AND BRING JOY.

About Me

Yohanes (=John the disciple) is the new name given by a Tiberias priest to my son Gerard, 14 yrs old, used to be severe autistic (now still moderate)+ suspected tourette syndrome. Yohanes adalah nama baru yang diberikan pendeta utk anak I saya yg autis(berattt..). Mujizat masih terjadi di jaman ini (Miracles still happen in this era): anak saya sudah dinyatakan sembuh dari jantung yg tadinya bocor (my son is declared cured from leaky heart, without any special treatment but a lot of prayer :D). Sementara kemajuan yg lain sy percaya akan menyusul. (I believe it will be followed by another healings & progress.) "Iman adalah dasar dari segala sesuatu yang kita harapkan dan bukti dari segala sesuatu yang tidak kita lihat."(Ibr 11:1, 1 Yoh 5:4-5) = "Faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen"(Hebrew 11:1, 1 John 5:4-5). Pengharapan kita hanyalah pada Tuhan... HOW GREAT IS OUR GOD... and WORTHY IS THE LAMB...
